The Whitsundays

The Whitsundays is one of the most beautiful – if not, THE most beautiful – archipelago in Australia. Should you ever find yourself on the East Coast this is something you should never, ever skip.

Take a multiple day boat trip!

Day 1

We stopped at a beautiful place where you had a view of the horizon among all the beautiful islands. There were many birds, especially Cockatoos, flying around us. In the water you could see many fish. Especially at night! Occasionally we would hear some water “splashing” at night when we were on the deck, which was a bit suspicious. Fortunately, our captain had a mega flashlight and could shine into the water. Soooo many fish. HUGE. But this is just the beginning of the trip.

White Haven Beach

Day 2

On the second day we were woken up by the waves, because our captain set sail at 05;00 in the morning. This was for a very good reason, because we were on our way to the highlight of the trip: Whitsunday Island. The island the archipelago is so well known for. We were there at 07:00 in the morning, like nobody else on this island. Yes indeed, the only people on the island were us. It was SO beautiful. We walked through the woods, because you had to go to the other side of the island to get to Whitehaven Beach. Saw some spiders, saw some snakes. Yeah, there’s all kinds of stuff there.

Once at the lookout, we all stood open-mouthed looking at the view. I can tell you how beautiful it is, but you should really see it for yourself sometime 😉 .

Then we walked down to get in the water at Whitehaven Beach. There were me-ga lots of stingrays here! Didn’t know that. Wasn’t prepared for it. So when they occasionally suddenly flew out of the sand I was startled, because nobody wants a Steven Irwin accident. Just be careful where you walk, because these creatures don’t harm a fly. They are beautiful and it was a very special experience.

Time to go back

Day 3

In time we left again and walked back to the boat. We went snorkeling among the biggest fish I’ve seen too. In fact, I think a 1.5-meter fish is pretty big. Then we went back on board and sailed a bit to our overnight spot.
On the third day, we went to our last snorkeling stop, went SUPing at sea and sailed back towards the coast with our boat.

In case you are not yet convinced: you MUST do this.
